Reminder that the Portland Sunrise Club social at Rising Tide Brewery takes place tonight, Sept 21st, at 5:30 PM. Unfortunately, visiting Rotarian Dr. Tadashi Suzuki from Aomori Japan, in town for a children's art exchange called Hashi-Maine, had a schedule change, and now can not attend our social. No worry, it will still be a lot of fun! Join in!
This Week's Speaker: Glenn Jordan, Pickleball Master!
Pickleball is one of the fastest growing games in the nation. This up-tempo game is an entertaining mix of tennis, badminton, ping pong and racquetball. It’s faced paced, easy to learn, great exercise and lots of fun! Pickleball is not just growing here, it is expanding across the entire globe. This competitive paddle sport is picking up speed for a number of reasons. It is known for its ease of learning and appeal to all ages. Anyone can play this sport! Whether they are looking for a fun game, healthy exercise or intense competition, pickleball has the ability to fulfill all of these desires. Pickleball players are known for their strong communal focus. And very little equipment is needed to play the game.
To provide a keen perspective on all things pickleball, we welcome Glenn Jordan, a semi-retired sportswriter for the Portland Press Herald who has been playing pickleball for 10 years and teaching it for three. He is a five-time Atlantic Regional gold medalist, a U.S. Nationals silver medalist and has a winning record at the Senior Pro level. He is married with three grown children, and all five family members have embraced the sport ... to varying degrees.
Portland Rotary Eastern Prom Ocean Clean-Up
Environmental Committee leader Ellen Niewoehner led a team of Portland Rotarians last Friday at the East End Beach Parking lot, cleaning the shoreline from the beach to Rotary Grove, aka Fish Point. This was an extension of National Ocean Cleanup Month helping to beautify our local beaches! Taking a break, Bruce Jones, Patty Byers, Ben Lowry, Ellen Niewoehner, Ron Bennett, Amy Chipman, Dick Hall, Dave Small, and Brian Nickerson. Great job everyone!
Join our Monthly Social Meetings!
Our Social on 9/15 at the Sea Dogs Brewery/ Easy Bowl in South Portland was a nice gathering of Rotarians enjoying a beautiful afternoon. Our socials are intended to give our club members a better opportunity to converse and get to know each other better, which is not always as easy in the lunch format. We have one per month, so take advantage of the great fellowship Rotary offers.
