This Thursday - Our Monthly Social!
This Thursday 9/15, we’ll be having our monthly social at The Sea Dog Brewery at Easy Day Bowling, 725 Broadway in South Portland. It’s  just over the Casco Bay Bridge from Portland. The plan is to gather at 4 PM. There’s easy access, ample parking and a great environment for our Rotary Social. No RSVP necessary.

Please plan to join your fellow, Portland Rotarians for casual fellowship,  enjoy a beverage and perhaps an appetizer. Remember, there will be no Friday meeting this week on September 16, as these socials replace our usual meeting for the week.
Instead of our Friday meeting - Let's Clean Up!
Ellen Niewoehner and our Environmental Committee needs your help for a morning of ocean-side cleanup down on the Portland Waterfront. We will meet at 9am this Friday 9/16,  at the East End Beach Parking lot, cleaning the shoreline from the beach to Rotary Grove, aka Fish Point.

With our club social meeting the night before and no formal meeting Friday, we look forward to a good turnout.  Tools will be supplied. More info? Reach out to Ellen!  Jeff Tarling, Portland City Arborist, said that he would have members of his team on site at the East End Beach to assist.
Flags For Heroes Dedication Ceremony| by Tom Nickerson
More than 50 Rotary Members, family, and Friends gathered at the Maine Mall Friday to dedicate the 2022 Flags for Heroes project. This is the fourth year that Portland Rotary has provided this stunning display in the middle of the mall to recognize the many everyday heroes (friends, family, mentors, coaches) in our community. The Flags for Heroes committee, led by Charlie Frair and Paul Tully, have done tremendous job in making this happen.

President Bruce Jones welcomed everyone to the ceremony. He opened by explaining to the group of Rotary members and on-lookers that this project is consistent with Rotary’s mission to improve lives for others and recognizing those who are or have improved our community is a critical part of that mission. President Bruce noted that our Flags highlights the many mentors, founders, and helpers who have left our community in a better place.

Paul Tully introduced our speaker, Pastor Dwayne Hopkins, chaplain to the Scarborough Fire and Police Departments and the Maine State Police, to talk about heroes and the impact that his father had on his family. Pastor Hopkins shared his thoughts of heroes as those who live for others and always have others in mind. In quoting Winston Churchill, he talked about the courage to stand up and speak, but also to have the courage to sit down and listen. He shared how his father often had to do both to help friends when it was difficult but the right thing to do and how that impacted his life. Pastor Hopkins encouraged the group to reflect on a broader definition of hero as we reflect on all of those honored today.

Nanette Duncanson then helped us close the ceremony with a wonderful rendition of God Bless America. It was a great sight to have so many Rotarians singing along in the mall. The Flags for Heroes display concludes on September 15th.
