This Week: Dr. Jason Judd, Educate Maine - Growing Maine's Workforce Through Partnerships
This week’s presentation will address the importance of growing Maine’s workforce by developing the talent that we have here in our state and attracting workers from outside of Maine. By bringing together business leaders, community members, and educators to build partnerships, our communities and families can thrive. Dr. Jason Judd, the Executive Director of Educate Maine, will share a variety of strategies to address the workforce challenges and lead a conversation with members about ways they can be part of this essential work.

Dr. Jason Judd is a former teacher, school counselor, and high school administrator. Jason has a bachelor's degree from the University of Maine at Farmington, a master's degree from the University of Southern Maine, and a doctorate from Northeastern University. His dissertation focused on how leaders foster and support innovation in schools. He currently serves as a board member for the Maine 4-H Foundation, an advisory board member of Live and Work in Maine, and as an education advisory board member of the Gulf of Maine Research Institute.
Meeting of July 29, 2022: Live Music! Schooner Fare Takes The Stage | by Tom Nickerson
Friday we were wonderfully entertained by Schooner Fare, a Maine original folk band featuring Steve and Chuck Romanoff. The program kicked off with Paul Tully sharing that Steve and Chuck were classmates from Cheverus High School and that the Class of 1965 launched some of the best musicians in the state.  Schooner Fare, the successor group to Devonsquare (1965), formed in 1975 when Steve and Chuck added Tom Rowe and decided that could make a living at this “music” thing. Schooner Fare enjoys a wide following including 15 albums, regular radio play and a performance with the Boston Pops.

Paul Tully, biggest smile, brought his Cheverus alumni classmates to our meeting, a reunion with Steve and Chuck!
Steve and Chuck then took over the microphone from Paul and began to regale us with stories of their beginnings and the fun they have performing.  After a few funny stories of how they launched their musical career, Steve and Chuck opened with one of their first songs, Day of the Clipper. After a rousing applause from the group, Steve and Chuck shared their experience with Devonsquare Friends – a 40 year reunion group that raises funds (and fun) for good causes. One of their early purposes was in honor of their friend Jack who seemed to have friends everywhere throughout Portland, and always gave help to those in need. They closed the story with Jack’s song,  Make a Friend. Steve and Chuck then wrapped it up with a favorite Maine song,  Portland Town. It was fun filled performance, perfect for a summer day. Bits and Pieces | by Jake Bourdeau
President Bruce Jones rang us in, Cyrus Hagge kicked-off the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, and Tom Talbott scored some points with his poem about a baseball game.

Matt Tassey hosted the raffle with over $430 on the line if the Queen of Hearts was picked from the deck. Mike Fortunato had his lucky ticket selected, but his luck turned when he pulled the five of spades from the deck, letting the kitty grow another week.

Jerry Angier was the Greeter and welcomed over 10 non-Rotarian guests to the meeting, including Mike Fortunato’s daughter and two granddaughters!

Ellen Niewoehner announced an upcoming volunteer event. Ellen and Kat Hall are co-chairing our second Ocean Cleanup day the morning of Friday, September 16th, more details coming. Our Environmental Committee on the go!

Emily Crowly announced that she volunteered to take over the Club’s social media Facebook page for the coming year. She asked the club members to send her any good photos of Rotarians or Rotarian events. She can also post promotions and club gatherings. You can email Emily at: ecrowley@curtisbaxter.com

Mike Robinson sent us a note that he is on the board of the Cromwell Center for Disability Awareness. They are this year’s beneficiary for the Beach to Beacon 10K race. As the race beneficiary, they need 30-35 volunteers to staff the mile 4 water stops during the race. The race is this Saturday August 6th from 6:30-10:00 am. There are other volunteer positions as well. This is a great opportunity for service and to be a part of this amazing race. If you are interested, please email our Executive Director, Susan Greenwood at sgreenwood@cromwellcenter.org.

Be a Proud "Flags For Heroes" Sponsor - Now's The Time!
Roxanne Cole spoke about the upcoming Flags for Heroes fundraising event being held at the Maine Mall. This is your chance to acknowledge a hero in your life and help a good cause. A flag and plaque honoring your hero will be placed at the Maine Mall for a week, September 7-14, for all the see and read about. The sponsorship is $100 and the goal is to have 100 flags with 50 non-Rotarians participating this year. Please contact your neighbors, friends, colleagues, and/or family members. More on our club website.

Dick Hall provided a reason to donate: 3 years ago Dick honored his father with a flag. Dick’s father was a B24 pilot who flew 29 missions. When his father received the plaque, he proudly displayed it on his desk at his nursing home. Any time someone walked in the room, his father would show them the plaque and acknowledge what his son had done for him.
Crutches4Africa -Help Needed Loading Supplies -August 20th
A Message from our District Chair, Dennis Robillard
Roger Fagan provided notice of an important service event. On Saturday August 20th, 9am, Rotarians will be loading the 12th container for shipment of mobility devices to Nigeria. The storage facility presently  does not have forklift capabilities so we will need many additional bodies. I am appealing to our clubs to lend a hand.

Loading will take place at 128 Saco Ave., Old Orchard Beach. If you can help for any amount of time, it would be greatly appreciated. If you think you might be attending, send me an email risc@maine.rr.com or text at 207-468-0443. The shipping world is chaotic right now and dates may change that are out of our control. In the event something changes I will let you know.

Thanks for all you do.
Dennis Robillard, Crutches 4 Africa District Chair
