Portland Rotary - Service & Memorial Fund

The Service and Memorial Fund is a private foundation affiliated with, but not part of, the Portland Rotary Club. Its trustees are appointed by the Board of Portland Rotary, and serve independently. The Service and Memorial Fund supports Portland Rotary’s students of the month (selected by the Youth Services Committee) and other charitable projects as determined by its board.

The Service and Memorial Fund’s assets are under the management of Head and Associates, a Portland investment management firm.

The Board exercises broad authority with regard to the use of the fund, determining whether grants will be made in a given year, and how many. In addition to making small grants, the fund has from time to time provided student loans, and loans to the Portland Rotary (such as $30,000 recently repaid, for the club's PATHS House project). In addition, the Fund has supported the Student of the Month program provided by the Youth Services Committee.

Also, the fund has supported the “Bo Martin Scholarship” – a $500 scholarship to a student from Greater Portland.

Service and Memorial Fund Grants:

The Service and Memorial Fund's grantmaking budget is determined by investment returns within its endowment over the course of the prior fiscal year. Because of significant market losses in 2008-9, the fund's grantmaking resources will be extremely limited in 2010.

Following its meeting in March, the board determined that In 2010 the service and memorial fund will be awarding only 5 grants of $500 each to 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organizations serving Portland and its immediate neighbor communities. As in recent years, we are focusing our grants on programs that provide direct service to young people.

Applications will be due on or before April 30th, and are best sent by email in .pdf format to portlandrotary@myfairpoint.net with "service and memorial fund" in the subject line.

Please include contact information, a brief budget showing how the funds sought will be used, and enough information on the project so someone without any prior knowledge of your project or your organization can understand it.

Service and Memorial Fund Scholarship:

The Service and Memorial fund may award a $500 "Bo Martin Scholarship" to one or two promising student-athletes from Portland area schools. Scholarship Applications are available from area guidance counselors and are due at the end of April.
