Portland Rotary's 96th President

William H. Blount- Rotarian since 1989

Thank you Portland Rotarians for choosing me to serve as your 2009-2010 club president!

While humbled to be among so many distinguished predecessors, I  am honored with the opportunity to fulfill the obligations that you have entrusted to me. In 1988, I joined the Utica NY Rotary for the principal reason of wanting to get to know more people in my newly-adopted community. That worked for me. I joined their tennis league as an entry-level hack to get better acquainted with the Utica Rotarians. I then started a similar league in the Portland Rotary that has been going 24 members strong since 1992.

Adopting the Rotary motto of "Service Above Self" was not completely foreign to me, as a similar motto of a school I attended was "Not to be Served, But to Serve." The first object of Rotary, developing acquaintance as an opportunity for service,  resonates with me. We will embrace club fellowship this year but I realize that fellowship alone will not bring to fruition the worthy aspirations of many Rotarians.

What do YOU want from Rotary? Act upon your good ideas which we can bring about by working alongside your fellow Rotarians with the impressive horsepower that a club of our size can provide. You have chosen to be a Rotarian. You chose me to help you with your goals.  The vitality of our volunteer organization is in your hands.

Sing out! Pitch in!   See you Fridays.
